THE SUMMER STAGE

The summer stage is a structure built in 1958, at an outstanding location of extraordinary quality provided by the ambient and good acoustics. It has an attractive structure and skillfully designed function, interpolated into the existing structure of the Niš Fortress. The rich program of cultural events which take place there, and which has proceeded uninterrupted for several decades (the Niš Film Festival, Choir Festival, various concerts and other performances), ranks it among the locations of great importance for the cultural life of the entire country.

Grigorije Samojlov, the architect of the pre-war generation of Russian emigrants, who already had significant works to his name, was invited to provide the conceptual design, which was worked out in detail by Branislav Savić and Desimir Dančević (the first conceptual sketches and static design of the reinforced-concrete console structure above the stage). The construction works were executed the same year, in a very short interval of only three months, for the first Festival of Amateur Choirs of Serbia (later, the Yugoslav Choir Festival). The seating capacity of the auditorium is around 3000 seats.
