THE ARMY HALL

One of the most remarkable structures in Niš was built in 1958 on Sinđelićev Square, the second central city square. With its complex composition, it occupies an entire block between Voždova, Generala Bože Jankovića and Vojvode Vuka streets.

Apart from the main designer, Jovan Petrović, this building features the name of another Belgrade architect Grigorije Samojlov, who provided a subsequent design of the great hall interior, when a certain deficiency in acoustics was solved by the addition of a balcony.

The building is a true representative of the International Style. Each volume segment is clearly defined by its geometry and function: a five-story tower with administrative rooms, a foyer and a great hall with 800 seats, a small hall with an exhibition ante-room, and a central restaurant with an atrium. The attractive ceiling structure of the hall exhibits a very imaginative engineering design. The façade cladding is Istrian marble, and the façade openings of the ground floor and mezzanine included the use of a new material at the time – aluminum. The appearance of the building after 55 years is a testimony of the quality of craftsmanship.

It is one of the two structures from Niš which are on the list of the significant buildings of the Moderne style, which was compiled by the international organization Docomomo Serbia.
