THE CAVALRY BARRACKS

The barracks are located on Bulevar 12. februar (12th February Boulevard), near the Red Cross concentration camp. According to military data, they were built in 1906 as a complex of two equal, symmetrically positioned buildings in respect to a central one (which no longer exists now), with the same form but larger volume. The architect is unknown.

The existing structures feature elements of Classicist architecture. They are symmetrical in form, and consist of three volumes. The medium volume is the largest one, with a central avant-corps and main entrance, additionally accentuated by the double window under the common tympanum on the floor. The façade is finished with horizontal pointing and profiled cornices. In the area of the medium volume, the cornice is supported by the consoles. The windows have frames and architrave cornices, and the corners are additionally accentuated by the rustically finished semi-columns.

The barracks initially housed the First Cavalry regiment, then the Tank battalion, and now the remaining structures are used for storage of important documents, as a part of the warehouse of the 3rd battalion.

The medium and the largest building was destroyed in the NATO aggression of 1999 with direct hits, while the lateral ones sustained damage which was later repaired.
