THE HIGH SCHOOL

The building is located close to the center of the city. It has been a high school since 1878, following the liberation from the Turks. It was founded by a special act of king Milan Obrenović. in the building planned for two classes. The present day high school building was constructed in the periods 1912 – 1914 and 1920 – 1922, according to the designs of the Belgrade architect Milorad Ruvidić.

The building of the Niš high school is a one-story building with a symmetrical composition of the main façade tract and a pronounced central avant-corps which houses the convention room immediately above the main entrance. The general composition shows traits of the monumental public buildings in Serbia at the beginning of the 20th century, and the elements of academism architecture, influenced by German classicism.

The building has retained its original functions, and the high schools “Stevan Sremac” and “Bora Stanković” use this building for their activities.
