THE “KOLONADA” BUILDING

One of the first collective residential buildings built in Niš after WWII, when the intensive housing development started, was built at the very beginning of Obrenovićeva Street, on its left side, in 1956. The existing city town planning matrix was reconstructed by demolishing the old and by constructing new buildings. The investors were mainly the Army, big public companies and institutions.

The design of the building is the work of Mihajlo Mitrović, one of the most important Serbian contemporary architects and authors. He is considered a representative of the so-called authorial architecture and of its romantic variant. There are a number of his residential–office buildings dating from this period in Niš. He was engaged in the extension of the town plan of Niš in 1953.

The architecture of this period is classified as belonging to the style known as the Late Moderne, which is characterized by rationality, functional layout designs and the logical formation of masses. The architects of this period designed façade s combining geometric forms which follow the structure and used a variety of colors and finishing styles. Very often, visual art elements were used – mosaics, murals etc., as well as new materials – metal and glass. The craftsmanship of specialist trade works is exquisite.

The façade was renovated in 2013.
