THE MAIN BUS STATION

The conceptual architectonic town-planning design by Mihailo Medvedev was adopted for construction in 1975, by the Town Planning Institute of Niš. The main design, where the structural system was changed, was the work of the architect Vlasta Vidić from the “Prokuplje project” company. The building itself was officially opened in 1977. The design of the interior, the design of the signs, of all the illumination, and the first working outfits were all the work of the architect Mihailo Medvedev.

The building is composed of the main administrative circular-shaped building which features large glazed areas at the level of the first floor, while the remaining area of the station is occupied by the platforms. The ground level of the building accommodates public spaces (the waiting room, ticket office, restaurant, buffet), while the upper floor and the small attic house the administrative offices. Within the station complex, there are platforms for the local bus lines, which are located along the Bulevar 12. februar (12th February Boulevard), along with the auxiliary offices.

The new bus station was built in the International Style of architecture, and new materials were used, such as the aluminum extrustions and ceramic tiles which were used for the finish of the façade planes. It was one of the most modern buildings in Niš at the time. The construction was based on an assembly system which allowed dismantling, as the plan included the relocation of the building since it was built in the proximity of the Fortress, a cultural monument of outstanding importance.
