THE SHOPPING AND OFFICE CENTER “GORČA”

This building in the pedestrian zone of the city of Niš was built in 1997, according to the designs of the Niš architects Aleksandar Buđevac and his son Saša Buđevac.

This is by itself a complicated engineering design and town planning undertaking, considering the fact that it unites several buildings in different land lots into a unique fabric of a shopping and office center. The building has a structural façade  which incorporates six protected buildings, among which the “Pelican” palace, which was demolished in 1965 and fully reconstructed at a later date, as well as the building with the street number 20, which has a secession decoration that was also reconstructed. It is a unique enterprise in the construction practice in Niš.

In terms of typology, the building is an atrium type building with a central hall radially surrounded by different functions – the shops are in the basement, at ground level and on the first floor, while the higher floors house the office space, apartment complex and a hotel which was the result of a later transformation of the building.  In terms of the spirit and esthetics, this building completely belongs to the post-Moderne style.

The function of the building has not been altered since it was built.
