The building is situated on the corner of Nikole Pašića and Obrenovićeva streets, in the center of the city. The conceptual design, which won first prize at a tender in 1981, was the result of the work of the Niš architects Predrag Janić and Dragoslav Veljković. The existing building, according to the entirely new architectonic program and concept, was built according to the designs of the Niš architect Predrag Janić, and the construction work was carried out by the public company JP “Građevinar” which was both the contractor and investor. The construction lasted between 1991 and 1993.
At this location, up until the 1980’s, there were shops located in ground-level buildings, and the coffee-house “Kalča” on the corner facing Nikole Pašića Street, which lent its name to the entire complex.
This building, which was the first shopping center in Niš was built in the spirit of the post-Moderne and it occupies the area of a city block, 122 x 86 meters. Around the central, glazed atrium hall with escalators, a total of 470 shops of various sizes are arranged on the ground level and two floors. The entire façade is structural, and the prominent feature of the façade are the glazed cupolas and stylized classical elements of entry portals with columns and tympanums in white marble.
