THE “STRAWBERRY” RESIDENTIAL BUILDING

With its characteristic façade, this residential building in Vožda Karađorđa Street, built in 1957, stands apart from the other buildings designed by Mihajlo Mitrović and constructed in Niš in the 1950’s. It can even be said that it is his best work.

The design of the façade , apart from architectonic, features visual artistic elements which are the harbingers of the approaching phase in architecture – characteristic author architecture of the late Moderne. The designer combined different materials (glass, aluminum, marble, concrete, mortar), various forms and sizes of apertures, in order to provide a satisfactory visual quality. The long façade front, with few floors, connects to another building designed by Mitrović – an eleven-story building on the west side (what is locally known as “Six”) and hotel “Niš” on the east side.

In designing the functional layout of the apartments, the architects in Yugoslavia of the time adhered to the modest standard principles, which were generally dictated by the economy. However, it was precisely there that they demonstrated their skill, by designing small but comfortable apartments, observing the proper orientation of the rooms. In this case, the staircase and auxiliary rooms are grouped facing north, i.e. the street, while the residential space faces south and overlooks a peaceful inner yard. The design made provisions for painting ateliers in the attic.
