“THE CHAPEL ON BUBANJ HILL”

The chapel within the Bubanj Memorial Park is the work of the Niš architect Saša Buđevac, built in 2003.

The simple cubic form of the building with a cross-like layout, in a contemporary way, with a glass and metal structure, interprets the form of early Byzantine church architecture. The traditionally developed forms of our church architecture in the late medieval period are organized into a powerful and clear-cut composition in the chapel. The motif of the cross in the chapel layout is a response to the demands of traditional church architecture, whereby the cubic structure does not impose the burden of complex forms, but emphasizes its symbolic meaning. The motif of the cross is pasted on the glass façade s of the chapel, in a way so as to symbolically segment and balance their surface.

For these characteristics, the building was awarded the Grand Prix of the Triennial of Architecture of Niš in 2003, and it won the special Certificate of Merit at the competition of the Annual Prize of the Union of Architects of Serbia in Belgrade 2005, and the Certificate of Merit of the 15th Salon of Architecture of Belgrade in 2003.
