STAMBOLIJA’S HOUSE

This single-story town house is located in the strict center of the city in the former Defterdar (or bookkeeper’s or financial) district. It was built in the last years of the Turkish rule, from 1875 to 1878. The construction was initiated by the Turk Amet Memetović, and completed by the famous Niš merchant Todor Stanković Stambolija who bought the house in 1878 after the liberation from the Turks.

It is a one-story post-and-pan house with bay windows and wide eaves. It is symmetrical, with a central hall and rooms arranged around it. The ground and the upper floor are connected with a wooden staircase which is an integral part of the halls, and has all the typical details in the exterior or interior, and wooden ceilings with characteristic rosettes. It was built as a wealthy town house with more than ten rooms.

The house belongs to vernacular style of architecture, and represents a characteristic example of the one-story residential house of the time. The reconstruction was finished in 1984 according to the designs of the architect Danica Janić, by being demolished and reconstructed anew. It is now used as the “Sinđelić” restaurant.
