DUŠAN’S BAZAR

The shopping center at the corner of Cara Dušana and Mije Petrovića streets was built in 1994 according to the designs of the Niš architect Aleksandar Radović. The conceptual design for this building was the work of the same designer, and it won first prize on the tender of 1992, in competition with eight other designs.

The long body of the building is divided into three segments characterized by different forms on the top – a two-story cupola, three-story pyramid and five-story tower, which prevented a mono-block appearance. The building is fitted into the spatial structure of historical ambiance, because the cupola is an extension of the existing adapted two-story building dating back to the period between the two world wars. In functional terms, the building has several entrances, staircases and lifts, as well as an internal street with three expansions, which are accentuated by the illumination through the cupola and lantern lights. Through a combination of traditional and contemporary instruments of materialization, such as artificial stone along with the aluminum and structural façade, the building is related to the characteristics of the building heritage of Niš and the modern trends in the architectonic trade.

The building retains its same function nowadays and is one of the recognizable shopping-office centers of Niš.
