IGA DIMITRIJEVIĆ’S PALACE

It is located in the representative section of the pedestrian zone of Niš, on the corner of Obrenovićeva and Svetozara Markovića streets. This corner residential–office building was built in 1939 for the use of Iga Dimitrijević and M. Milojković, merchants from Niš. It represents the most significant of several residential multi-story buildings which were designed in the spirit of the early Moderne by the most important Niš architect of Russian descent of the period, Aleksandar Medvedev.

Certain parts of the building volume were recessed and the fourth floor corner finish was accentuated, which was a usual procedure of the time, but it is interesting that the two adjacent façade-bearing walls were treated differently: the one facing the main street has a more lavish finish. The full vertical on the corner is counterpointed by the horizontal shallow stripes, which is a discrete but effective decoration.

The building retained its residential and business function. The façade of the building was reconstructed in 2012, which accentuated its significance and position within the street front of the pedestrian street.
