MERCHANT RAJHL’S BUILDING

It is situated on the corner of Svetozara Markovića and Nade Tomić streets. It was built by the merchant and hotel owner Evgenije Rajhl, from Vojvodina, as a ground-level building with an attic. The designer is unknown, and there is data indicating that it was built in 1923.

In terms of architectonic formation, the building has eclectic characteristics. The corner is dominated by a three-sided apse with three narrow windows, and below each of them there are niches housing the relief presentations of chalices with flowers. The longer side of the building is situated in Svetozara Markovića Street, with a tower housing the main entrance. The attic was constructed above the prominent and profiled cornice. All the openings are finished in a manner which was characteristic of the town houses of the time.

After WWII, the building housed several significant city institutions, particularly in the cultural domain, and nowadays it is used for political purposes.
