THE “ANDONOVIĆ” PALACE

The building known as the Andonović palace is located in the central pedestrian–shopping street in Niš. The building which is considered to be the most valuable architectonic work of art erected between the two world wars in Niš was built in 1927. It was commissioned by the wholesale merchant of “stylish and manufactured commodities”, Andon Andonović, according to the designs of the Belgrade architect Milutin Borisavljević.

The palace was built in the spirit of French Neo-classicism and decorated with a deep relief of artificial stone. The central niche includes, as requested by Andonović, the naked figure of Mercury, god of commerce, who has a bag, a symbol of wealth, in one hand, and a scepter, a symbol of power, in the other hand.  The façade also features pilasters on two floors with Ionian capitals and rows of lavishly finished window frames in deep relief, rows of balconies made of wrought iron and the prominent profile of the top cornice ending in a garret.

The residential–business function of the building nowadays is identical with the original design.
