This corner building on Kralja Aleksandra Square, with powerful volumes of lateral wings and a pronounced corner section above the entry colonnade, through its monumentality reflects the purpose for which it was designed. It was built in 1938 by the Army of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, following the designs of the architect Drag. M. Simić from Belgrade, on behalf of the contractor cooperative “Braća Krstić”.
Even though it was conceived in a classical manner, with a simple finish of the façade and the interweaving of the wings and central sections, one may notice elements the early Moderne style. The inclined roof and the sculptures above the entry frieze are the result of a compromise between traditional and new designs.
In the bombing of 1999, a part of the southern wing was destroyed, but it was rebuilt based on a model of the original building, and the entire building façade was renovated in 2003. The purpose of the building remains the same to this day. It is owned by the Serbian Army, and is nowadays the Headquarters of the Ground Forces.
