On the periphery of the park “Čair”, there lies the largest sports hall in Niš. The conceptual and main design of the hall was done by the Niš architect Ljupka Kovačević, and the static design and structural solution of the roof structure was done by the Belgrade architect Đorđe Zloković, a member of the academy of science. This circular hall, with a span of 80 meters, was built in 1974.
It was built with a central court and circular amphitheater with 4000 seats, surrounded by spacious halls on two levels. The facilities which were added later completed the function of this building: a hotel with 50 beds and a restaurant with 200 seats, a small training hall, fitness center, sauna and press center. Reinforced concrete was used for the structure of the building and the stands, while the roof structure is a catenary made of steel cables and pre-stressed concrete slabs. The formation of the façade planes was supplemented by large glass panels between the columns built of natural concrete. In terms of its architectonic characteristics, the hall belongs to the International Style in architecture.
The building was reconstructed in 2010 according to the designs of the architect Marko Daković. This intervention entirely changed the form of the building, which began to reflect the contemporary tendencies in architecture, with an aluminum-glazed façade suspended over the existing structure. The additional decorative element is the multi-colored illumination and aluminum brise-soleils. The reconstruction expanded the auditorium space and auxiliary business functions, organized around the entrances.
The original hall was awarded the October Sports Prize of Niš in 1974.
