THE TEACHER’S HALL

The building is located on the corner of Kralja Stefana Prvovenčanog and Ćirila i Metodija streets. It was built with the help of the donations of teachers and citizens in 1933, according to the designs of the architects Julijan Djupon and Bora Simović.

The main entrance to the building is oriented towards Sinđelićev Square, while the shops are oriented towards Kralja Stefana Prvovenčanog Street. In terms of their architectonic formation, a combination of various elements can be noticed. The façade is horizontally divided by dividing cornices, and vertically by pilasters. On the corner, facing the square, there is an octagonal tower with a dome with an entrance section, constructed in the spirit of Neo-Renaissance, with a terrace and characteristic balustrade.

The hall had a public and residential function. Apart from accommodation for teachers and the banquet hall, other services were provided, intended for the work and stay of teachers and their children.

After WWII, the building’s use changed several times, but it was finally returned to the teachers of Niš.

The Niš Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments completely reconstructed the Teachers’ Hall in 1995, and the works were supervised by the architect Danica Janić.
